Wetland Forest

Soil in the wetland forest is only saturated for a few weeks in spring; in summer and in fall it may dry up completely. Trees and shrubs that tolerate periodically saturated soil are abundance here: pin oak (Quercus palustris), red maple (Acer rubrum) and winterberry (Ilex verticillata).

If you look carefully at the moist soil along the edge of the boardwalk, you may find animal tracks and crayfish mounds. Also note the “toad passages” under the walkway. These prevent the trail from becoming a barrier to small animals such as toads, snakes and turtles and allow their populations on both sides to stay connected.
