The Future of Ladew Gardens

Knowing that gardens are living things and are constantly changing, a primary goal is to maintain and nurture the house and gardens much as they were during the lifetime of Harvey Ladew. As a result, periodic restoration as well as routine maintenance of buildings, gardens and furnishings are essential.

In April of 2002, the restoration of the Iris Garden was completed. The Iris Garden was the last of the fifteen garden rooms designed and built by Mr. Harvey Ladew. This project included replanting irises, replacing the streambed and completing the garden entrance.

Another garden project is the hedge restoration, begun in 1995. With the onset of the wooly adelgid, an insect affecting hemlocks up and down the East Coast, it became necessary to address the aging hemlock hedges to preserve Mr. Ladew's design of the Croquet Court, Great Bowl and Terraces. Breaking up the monoculture (single specimen plantings) with yew and arborvitae will greatly extend the life of the hedges. Combined with the healthy practice of trimming the hemlock topiary only once annually in late summer, these efforts ensure that Harvey Ladew's gardens will continue to thrive.

In addition to yearly fundraisers that benefit specific projects such as the Iris Garden Restoration, other important revenue comes from membership, admissions, contributions and events.

Approximately 25,000 visitors enjoy the manor house, gardens and nature walk each year and 6,000 members and donors support Ladew Gardens. Everyone is welcome to join!

Maintaining these 22 acres of gardens, country manor house and Nature Walk are 6 full-time, year-round gardeners and seasonal staff.
